Learn More About Cunard Cruises

The 3 ships of Cunard regularly receive accolades for their stylish furnishings and elegant interiors, keeping up with the cruise line's tradition of onboard opulence. The ocean cruise brand is unique, as it offers secluded dining for select passengers. Therefore, guests staying in staterooms dine at a different venue than passengers who occupy suites. Outside your luxurious lodging, you can relax and savor dining options, such as the Golden Lion, known for its steaks and pub drinks on all 3 ships of the Cunard fleet. The cruise line, as of 2020, also features one-way and round-trip transatlantic crossings to major cities across the U.S. Europe, Canada, the Middle East, the Pacific Islands, and Australia. The shore excursions you have access to depend on a cruise's schedule and length. As of 2020, cruise voyages on Cunard last from 2 to 113 nights. Examples of excursions include a scenic drive along the Amalfi Coast of Italy or a desert safari in Durban, South Africa. Cunard's ships feature casino gambling, art galleries, enrichment programs, ballroom dance instruction, lectures, and computer classes for guests. Cruise guests like the fact they can choose from various cabin classes and several specialty restaurants.

  • Cunard Line is a British cruise brand whose hub is Carnival House, Southampton England. The cruise company is overseen by Carnival UK and owned by Carnival Corporation & plc.
  • The cruise line and its 3 ships are registered in Hamilton, Bermuda, and have been registered there since 2011.
  • Between 1909 and 1929, the Mauretania, owned by Cunard, held the record for the fastest eastern crossing of the Atlantic Ocean.
  • When the Mauretania was built in 1907, the shipbuilders conveyed testing results secretly by using carrier pigeons, just in case the vessel had a problem.
  • Cunard's Britannia made her first sea voyage in 1840. The ship, which sailed from Liverpool to Boston, had 63 passengers on board along with 93 crew members. A cow was also on the ship to provide the passengers and crew with fresh milk.
  • Sails were used on early Cunard liners to stabilize the ships during stormy and rough weather.
  • Author, Charles Dickens, shared his 1842 voyage to the U.S. on Cunard's Britannia in Chapter 2 of his book, American Notes.
  • During the Crimean War, Cunard ships were used for hospitals.
  • Cunard's Lucania was the first sea vessel to feature suites. The onboard accommodations featured two cabins that were connected, in-between, by a sitting room.
  • It is believed that Cunard's ship, the Queen Mary, was originally meant to be named Queen Victoria. When a Cunard proposed the ship's name to King George V, it requested that the ship be named for the greatest queen in England, which it understood was the king's grandmother, Queen Victoria. However, King George misinterpreted Cunard's meaning and agreed that his wife, Queen Mary, would be pleased to know that the ship would be named after her.
  • Cunard's historic ship, the Queen Mary, is now a floating hotel in Long Beach, California.
  • Cunard has always figured prominently in the history of England. As of 2010, the cruise lines' three main vessels include the RMS Queen Mary, the MS Queen Victoria, and the MS Queen Elizabeth.
  • The RMS Queen Mary entered service in 2004.
  • Cunard features cruises from the US and Canada, event cruises, world voyages, grand voyages, transatlantic crossings, and Christmas cruises.

During the day, casual attire is always appropriate throughout the ship. Evenings on all voyages are designated either Formal, Semi-Formal or Elegant Casual with dress suggestions listed in the ship's Daily Programme. Formal nights are among the most unique and exciting moments of many voyages — an all-too-rare opportunity to dress to the nines as you celebrate a Royal Nights themed ball. However, even on Formal evenings, more Elegant Casual attire is perfectly acceptable at certain alternative dining venues.

FORMAL: Black tie or formal dark suit for gentlemen. Evening dress or other formal attire for ladies. Military or Award decorations may be worn on formal nights. A range of gentlemen’s formal wear is available to hire or purchase on board the ship.
SEMI-FORMAL: Jacket and tie for gentlemen. Cocktail dress or trouser suit for ladies. No jeans.
ELEGANT CASUAL: Jacket, no tie required for gentlemen. Dress, skirt or trousers for ladies. No jeans.

On shore, you’ll want comfortable clothes for sightseeing. The type of clothes you bring depends on the itinerary. Even in warmer climates, it can get cold on deck, so some warmer clothes are always advised. It is advisable to bring a lightweight raincoat and umbrella, and you’ll want to make sure you have proper attire for visiting shrines, churches, mosques and temples (i.e., leg and shoulder coverings for both men and women).

Fuel Surcharge Policy on Cunard Cruises

Cunard reserves the right to impose a fuel supplement on all passengers if the NYMEX oil price exceeds $70 per barrel, even if fares have been paid in full.

Health and Safety Protocols on Cunard Cruises

Before you board.
All guests will be subject to testing for Covid-19 in the period before traveling and/or at the cruise terminal. If a guest tests positive for Covid-19, or if anyone in their household has any symptoms or are self-isolating in the days prior to their voyage, they will not be permitted to board.
Prior to your departure, Cunard will send you the latest public health guidance as well as pre-voyage information about mitigating the risk of Covid-19, along with a health declaration questionnaire. Please read this carefully as this will include information regarding what to expect when you arrive at the terminal, your time on board, any country specific requirements to be aware of and other relevant protocols while you are traveling with us.

Boarding your ship.
We have enhanced our boarding procedures, working with our partners in the ports. In the cruise terminal, you will be required to adhere to the wearing of face coverings and social distancing, in accordance with all current guidelines.
Further health screening will be conducted before you board your ship. This will include a review of your health declaration questionnaire, a temperature check and more comprehensive medical screening if required. If a guest tests positive for Covid-19, or is identified as having Covid-19-like symptoms, or if they have been exposed or potentially exposed to Covid-19 then they will not be allowed to board.

Cleanliness and care.
We have always taken pride in the cleanliness of our ships. Our enhanced measures will raise these standards even higher, ensuring all areas are inspected and cleaned even more regularly, with products proven to be effective against Covid-19. Added hand sanitizer and hand-washing stations will also be available for your comfort and wellbeing.

Restaurants and bars.
Dining aboard one of our Queens will always be part of what makes a voyage with Cunard so special. Going forward, you may be asked to pre-reserve a table at our restaurants and you will only be permitted to dine with your traveling group or household. Additionally, dishes in our buffets and deck grills will now be served by our wait staff, while each of our restaurants and bars will be adapted to allow for social distancing.

Entertainment.
We’ll continue to offer a comprehensive program of music, theater and guest speakers on each of our voyages, with measures in place to ensure each performance adheres to the latest wellbeing and social distancing guidance.

Activities and leisure.
Areas such as our spa, salon, gym, pools, casino, shops, lounges and children’s clubs will be operating but will be subject to the latest approved guidance to minimize contact, reduce the number of guests in each area, and maintain the highest levels of cleanliness. All public areas will be adapted for social distancing and elevator capacity will be reduced. You may also see changes such as pre-booking come into effect in some areas of our ships for certain activities.

Your suite or stateroom.
Your stateroom steward, or butler if you’re staying in our Queens Grill suites, will maintain your accommodation to our enhanced housekeeping standards throughout your stay. To ensure social distancing, we will kindly ask that you are not in your accommodation while cleaning is taking place. To enhance our stateroom experience even further, we’ll be introducing an extended complimentary room service menu for you to enjoy.

In port.
You can still go ashore and explore the amazing ports we visit, initially only with our organized and vetted shore experiences. Port transfer and organized shore experience operators will be subject to new policies and procedures to reflect the latest approved guidance in line with our on board protocols, and will comply with all local guidance relating to social distancing and face coverings, which may differ from the guidance in your home country. Temperature checks and health screening may be carried out again on re-boarding the ship.

Post-voyage (track and trace).
All guests and crew will need to complete a passenger locator form to adhere to the UK Government’s Track and Trace initiative. Local country initiatives may also apply at the time of sailing.

Payments / Refunds on Cunard Cruises

If you need to cancel your cruise vacation, cancellation fees will apply according to Cunard’s standard cancellation policy. The fee amount depends on the length of your itinerary and how far in advance of your departure date you cancel. Please refer to the charts below to determine your refund eligibility.

If you’ve already purchased CunardCare®, your refunds for covered cancellation reasons will be governed by CunardCare. For complete details, please review the plan's coverage, conditions, and exclusions. We strongly recommend purchasing CunardCare† for added peace of mind—it not only protects against unexpected cancellations but also offers partial reimbursements for trip delays, interruptions, lost or damaged baggage, and medical coverage.

†CunardCare is available to U.S. and Canadian residents (excluding New York State, Quebec Province, and Puerto Rico). Guests in other regions may have different coverage options and can refer to the At-Ease Waiver Program for more information.

Refund Schedules & Final Payment Due Date

Tipping Policy on Cunard Cruises

The “hotel and dining service charge” is a daily fee per guest that will automatically be added to your onboard account for your convenience. This charge recognizes the hard work of a variety of crew members who contribute to the White Star service experience for all guests. The eligible crew members work across different departments and may rotate among various ships within our fleet. The amount of the hotel and dining service charge is determined by your stateroom category and is charged daily to your account, as outlined below.

For voyages departing until April 25, 2024 for Queen Elizabeth, and April 27, 2024 for Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria:

  • Inside, Oceanview, and Balcony: $14.50 USD
  • Grill Suite: $16.50 USD

We are committed to guest satisfaction, and our Purser’s Office onboard is available to address any concerns you may have. In the rare case that you remain dissatisfied, the hotel and dining service charge may be adjusted at your discretion anytime during the cruise, up until you settle your onboard account before disembarkation. If no adjustments are made onboard, the payment becomes final and nonrefundable.

No additional “tipping” is required for hotel and dining staff. However, if you would like to personally reward any other crew members for exceptional service, you are welcome to do so. You also have the option to pre-pay these charges before boarding the ship by contacting Cunard at 1-800-728-6273.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the specialty dining options?

All 3 of Cunard's ships feature a steakhouse specialty restaurant that is not included in the price of your fare. Buffets are also featured on the 3 Cunard ships. The establishment is known as the Lido Restaurant on Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth, and the King's Court on Queen Mary 2. Reservations for specialty dining can be made 3 months prior to your sail date through Cunard's Voyage Personalizer or by calling the Customer Contact Center and paying a cover charge.

What is the cruise line’s dress code?

While shirts, shorts, and beachwear are suitable for daywear, anyone wearing the clothing after 6:00 p.m. will be asked to go to the King's Court or Lido Restaurant for dinner. When women dine in the more formal restaurants on board ship, they are expected to wear longer maxi skirts, tailored pantsuits, or cocktail dresses. Men should wear crew neck sweaters, shirts with a tie or an open collar, and sports blazers. For gala nights, men are typically expected to wear tuxedos and women should wear formal evening gowns. Some exceptions may prevail, especially, for instance, if the theme of the night is the "Roaring Twenties."

What are some of the alternative dining venues featured onboard?

For an additional cost, you can choose alternative dining in one of a variety of themed restaurants. For example, the Steakhouse at the Verandah showcases tender prime ribs and seafood. You can also sample Mexican and Aztec cuisine at the King's Court or Lido Restaurant. Bamboo features Asian delicacies while La Piazza provides Italian specialties. The Smokehouse Restaurant offers menu selections that are inspired by the traditional American grill. Your taste buds will never get bored when you take a cruise trip on Cunard.

How do you book or cancel an offshore excursion?

To book a Cunard offshore excursion, you can, about 12 weeks before sailing, reserve an excursion through Cunard's Voyage Personaliser. You can also make reservations to join an offshore excursion 3 days before your cruise's embarkation date. You will need to remit a payment upon booking the excursion. If you decide to cancel an offshore trip, cancel the reservation 7 days before the planned activity via Cunard's Voyage Personaliser.

What is the Voyage Personaliser?

The Voyage Personaliser is made available through the portal, My Cunard, which assists you in preparing for your cruise holiday. Manage your travel details, book offshore excursions in advance, and add amenities to your journey on the platform. The "My Cunard" account portal can be accessed until you set sail. You need to log in with your cruise's booking number.

We love traveling on Cunard but lately they have been penny pinching. We were disappointed to see that we now have to pay to participate in archery or fencing and some shows at the theater now have a fee. You also get penalized if you want to book activities on board because they jacked up the prices 10%, which means if you book activities prior to your departure and you are then unable to use your onboard cabin credit towards those activities. A bit of a scam!

The Transatlantic voyage on Queen Mary 2 was a world-class experience. Counting the transport from Southampton to New York, plus 7 nights accommodation, all-you-can-eat meals, and entertainment, the package cost about the same as a one-way flight. Good value.
